A Little Gift

Every time we go to pay our landlady our monthly rent, she gives us a little gift. This is something that I quite look forward to because each month it is a little bit different. In previous months we have gotten persimmons, eggs, eggplant, and laundry detergent. This month we got udon noodles.

The thing I like most about receiving the gifts is that she seems to just look around and offer us whatever she sees lying around. Before she gives it to us she always asks us if we will use the item (in Japanese). Sometimes this ends up being pretty strange. With the laundry detergent, for example, it was, “do you do laundry?” This time it was, “do you eat udon?”

Each month is another little surprise and I never know what we will get. So, we will wait and see what next months payment brings us.
