This is not Safe

Rafting Group

A few weekends ago we went whitewater rafting on the Nagara river with a large group of JETs. Now, I had never been rafting before, and I don’t typically enjoy water-related sports (kayaking, canoeing, etc), so, I was particularly nervous about this event.

Fortunately, we were in good hands. We were broken down into small groups and given a very capable, and knowledgeable guide. She walked us through all the commands and we practiced everything in a slow-moving, rapid-less section of the river.

Our Boat

After the slow, safe start, things definitely got more intense.

The Rapids

Although, not a lot more intense. Fortunately for me, the river level was very low so all the rapids were pretty tame. As a result, the guide kept having us do things to make the rapids a bit more fun and exciting.

At one point, she had us load all of the people onto one end of the boat before we reached the rapid. This caused everything to be a whole lot more unstable.

This is not Safe

Right about now, as our unstable boat approached the rock face, I said, “This is not safe.” I don’t know why it came out, I blame a few years of working as a teacher and constantly reminding my students to be safe and make good choices, but the other JETs on my boat got a good, hearty laugh. Just call me Dorky Danielle.

Even though I was a little afraid (okay, maybe a lot), I am really glad that I went. I ended up having a really good time.

Having Fun
