Sights and Sounds

Temple Banners

During my first three years in Chicago, I rode my bike to work nearly everyday. The last year I started to slack a bit, and stopped making it a habit. Now that I am in Japan, and do not have a car, I have started riding a bike to work everyday.

I have been quickly reminded how much I love this simple, daily activity. Somehow it helps me to feel connected to the city I live in, the weather and my body. It is a great way to wake up and start each and every day.

I especially like that I am able to pay attention to the little changes in the environment around me. Whether that is the ever-changing window displays on Damen Ave. in Chicago, or the decoration of temples that I pass, I love being able to see it and take it all in.

Last week, as I rode my bicycle. I noticed a slight makeover at the temple along the cycling road. Banners were put up, white flowers were planted, and the place was generally spruced up. It was beautiful and I was so glad that I was able to pass it each day and watch as it was transformed.

I also had the chance, and the weather cooperated, to take pictures at the temple on Friday on my way home from work. The sun came out from behind a cloud just as I was riding up to the temple, giving me a perfect moment to stop and enjoy the sights and sounds.
