Our first earthquake

Earthquake map

Danielle posted about us racking up a whole new load of firsts now that we are in japan. Well we just both added a lifetime first. Our first earthquake! It was a 3 in magnitude at the epicenter, but just a 1 pointer here in gifu. Still we felt it, stopped dead in our conversation looked at one another and said, “Hey! was that just an earthquake?”

Good times….. Good times.

I recall feeling a little quakeage while visiting my aunt on Coronado Island many years ago. It is pretty freaky.

So I told my supervisor today that we felt our first earthquake. She didn’t feel it and didn’t realize that their had been an earthquake, so I showed her the map on the top of this post. She looked at the map, saw that it was only a 1.0 in Gifu city and asked me where I was when I felt it. I told her that I was lying in bed, talking with Aaron. She made this little gasp and I asked her what was wrong. She said that if we could feel a 1.0 earthquake in our apartment, it must not be very strong. With a stronger earthquake, maybe our building will fall down. Now, that’s reassuring!

Are you sure it was an earthquake….
or did Aaron just break out ‘the sleaze’ ?

You felt a 1.0 earthquake? Dogs don’t feel 1.0 earthquakes. Are you sure it wasn’t a passing train?

In fairness the earthquake was in fact a 3 point earthquake at the epicenter, it just registered as a 1.0 at our nearest mesurement facility. Which is in the opposite direction from the epicenter.

Otherwise I donno what to tell you. We are in an old building on the third floor, apparently they tend to shimmy a bit more in even small earthquakes.

  7. […] just a few days ago Eric asked if we have felt another earthquake after that first one. Well, now, the answer is yes! Today, right after we got home from work and were sitting around […]
